“I think one of the errors comedians sometimes make is finding their audience before finding their voice; funny is funny to everyone, and the open mics have a very mixed audience… you never want to end up in a place where you’ve been doing comedy for seven years and then end up in a room of people where it makes you nervous because it’s not the kind of room that you’re used to… I think build your voice, know who you are, and then when you show up on stage that’s when you start building your audience,” – Ashwyn Singh
Ashwyn Singh is a South Asian stand-up comedian originally from New Delhi but now calls Canada home, has toured across India, and has opened for comedians such as Bassam Youssef and Daniel Fernandes. Now is sharing his comedy with people Canada-wide. Ashwyn’s humorous commentary primarily focuses on family, society, and culture and takes twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The Universal Radio Network’s own Sapreet Buttar had the chance to catch up with Ashwyn and talk about his time performing back in India, his experience performing now in Canada, and more in this episode.
At the beginning of the interview, Ashwyn discusses his experience so far in Edmonton and Canada as a whole (1:30), when he figured comedy was the career path for him (3:27), whether he is receiving the same amount of adoration in Canada compared to back home in New Delhi (5:27), if he took a look at other conventional career paths before becoming a comedian (6:50), when he’ll be performing in Edmonton (8:57), and what Ashwyn believes is needed to get more South Asians into the comedy scene (10:26). Next Ashwyn talks about where his inspirations come from and where he finds his content (12:17), the one Hindi song that cracks him up (18:08), and what listeners can expect from his shows (19:24).
